But I just got my hand on Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS).
I've been wanting this game ever since it came out, but they only have the Special Edition, which cost more.
Why not buying virtual? Well, I like collecting the package.
It gives me... a sense of accomplishment, I guess? ^^a
I've been playing a lot of Megaten series, although I didn't play the original one.
I enjoy playing Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, Shin Megami Tensei Avatar Tuner and Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha.
In Shin Megami Tensei IV, you play as Flynn.
From left to right, they are Navarre (not important), Jonathan, Flynn, Walter and Isabeau.
Flynn is your regular silent protagonist, he don't talk... much.
Like most of Megami Tensei series, you will face a lot of choices during playing.
These choices will affect the ending and who you will face as bosses near the end of the story.
That's why you have to play 3 times to see all of the ending, which is Law, Chaos or Neutral.
....... The first time I play it, I though Jonathan was a girl... ^^;
Now, for gameplay...
Shin Megami Tensei is famous for their challenges, especially their difficulty level.
The enemies is merciless, the experience and Macca (money) is sparse and you need to prepare your demon as best as you can.
Luckily, fight is no longer on random encounter.
You can see them on the map, press X to get pre-emptive attack and if you want, you can Escape from battle.
Escape is 100% guaranteed to succeed... Unlike the previous tittle.
But, since you are alone, you need to recruit... In Megaten case, you need to recruit demon.
You can talk to Demon and ask them to join your party.
Of course they will ask for a lot of things and might ended up leaving you after demanding a lot of things.
But if your negotiation went well, they will join you... Where you can raise their level and fuse them to make new demon!
You can fuse demon anywhere, anytime you like.
You can also save your game anytime you like, preferably before boss battle.
During battle, you have to expose enemies' weakness and try to earn Press Turn.
If you hit their weakness, you got 1 extra turn.
Keep on hitting their weakness, and you can get at least 2 extra turn.
But keep in mind that enemies can do the same for you....
Macca is rare and enemies won't drop Macca after being beaten into bloody pulp by you..
You earn money by doing quest and finding Relics all around the places.
But this money will goes bye-bye fast when you use them to buy demon, items and equipment...
So you need to use your App, which can be bough using AP.
You earn AP by gaining level, and there are a lot of AP that you can master.
But let me tell you about my experience when playing it for the first time.
I got KILLED and fast! I was speechless...
But you can get resurrected by paying using Play Coins.
So I did that.... And in the next 20 minutes, I got killed... Again!
This time, I don't have to pay anything and BOOM! Difficulty level opens.
I was like.... Oh... Ooooh.... OOOOH!!
Overall, Shin Megami Tensei is a good J-RPG and offers challenges to those who enjoys it.
The music is OK, the character's voice (US) is also superb and I love it!
It's a bit easier that Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, but still annoying.
But I love grinding and trying to get stronger demons is always fun for me.
